- Vision to “Telos” – Greek Philosophy
The Greek philosopher Plato believed that there is a world of perfect Forms that exists beyond the physical world we see around us. These Forms are the true reality, and the physical world is just a shadow of the Forms.
One of the most important Forms is the Form of the Good. The Form of the Good is the source of all goodness and truth in the universe. It is the ultimate goal of human existence to achieve union with the Form of the Good.
Plato believed that the telos, or purpose, of humankind is to achieve eudaimonia, which is often translated as “happiness” or “well-being.” However, Plato’s eudaimonia is not simply about pleasure or happiness in the moment. It is about living a life that is in accordance with the Form of the Good.
To achieve eudaimonia, we must cultivate our reason and our moral virtues. We must also strive to understand the Forms and to live in accordance with them.
Real-life applications of Plato’s Theory of Forms
Plato’s theory of Forms can be applied to many different areas of our lives. Here are a few examples:
- Career: When choosing a career, we can ask ourselves what Form we want to embody in our work. Do we want to be a doctor, who embodies the Form of healing? A teacher, who embodies the Form of knowledge? A musician, who embodies the Form of beauty?
- Relationships: In our relationships, we can ask ourselves what Forms we want to cultivate. Do we want to be a loving and compassionate partner, who embodies the Form of love? A supportive and encouraging friend, who embodies the Form of friendship? A wise and understanding parent, who embodies the Form of wisdom?
- Personal development: We can also use Plato’s theory of Forms to guide our personal development. What Forms do we want to strive for in our own lives? Do we want to be more rational, more virtuous, more knowledgeable, or more beautiful?
- Spiritual life: Plato’s theory of Forms can also be applied to our spiritual life. What Form do we believe is the ultimate reality? Do we believe in a God or a higher power? What is our relationship to the divine?
How to find your telos
Finding our telos, or purpose, in life is not always easy. However, Plato’s theory of Forms can give us some guidance. We can ask ourselves what Forms we are drawn to and what Forms we want to embody in our lives. We can also reflect on our values and passions, and think about what kind of impact we want to make in the world.
By following these steps, we can begin to find our own telos and live a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.
Conclusion
Plato’s theory of Forms is a complex and challenging philosophical concept. However, it can also be a very rewarding way to think about the meaning of life. By understanding the Forms, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. We can also find our own telos and live a life that is in accordance with the highest Forms.
